As a new wave of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus variants dominates Europe, with increasing rates of hospital admissions, health agencies are endorsing a new round of COVID-19 vaccinations.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended today that second booster doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines be considered for people between 60 and 79 years old.
And for people with medical conditions putting them at high risk of severe disease.

Scientists Discover How a Protein and Enzymes Enabling Hepatitis A Virus Replication

While focusing on the viral replication cycle in the hepatitis A virus (HAV), UNC School of Medicine scientists recently discovered that replication requires specific interactions between the human protein ZCCHC14 and a group of enzymes called TENT4 poly(A) polymerases. 
They also found that the oral compound RG7834 stopped replication at a critical step, making it impossible for the virus to infect liver cells.

Frontline Antibiotics Losing to Typhoid Mutations

The bacteria that causes typhoid fever is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics used to treat the disease, with resistant strains spreading to hundreds of countries in the past three decades, according to an analysis published by The Lancet Microbe in June 2022.
This recent study shows how resistant strains from South Asia, where the disease is endemic, have spread 200 times to other countries since 1990.
