The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Arexvy™, the first single-dose, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine approved for use in the United States.
GSK plc's Arexvy is approved for preventing lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) caused by RSV in individuals 60 and older.
The U.S. launch is planned before the start of the 2023/24 RSV season.

India's Dengue Epidemic Took Decades to Develop

A multi-institutional study led by researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) shows how the dengue virus has evolved dramatically over the last few decades in the Indian subcontinent.  
Cases of dengue have steadily increased in the last 50 years, impacting over 100 countries, predominantly in South-East Asian counties.
These IISc researchers examined 408 genetic sequences of Indian dengue strains from infected patients collected between 1956 and 2018 by others and the team.

International Travel Increases Antimicrobial-resistant Infection Risk

Researchers reported today in the Journal of Infectious Diseases an increase in non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infections in the United States suggests international travel is a significant risk factor for antibiotic resistance.
Globally, NTS infections are responsible for the highest-burden of all foodborne diseases.
Among 9,301 NTS infections reviewed in this study, 1,159 (12%) occurred after recent international travel.

Bird Flu Continues Culling America's Largest Bird

Health officials fear America’s largest birds may become extinct because the highly contagious influenza A H5N1 virus (bird flu) continues to spread.
Recently, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) confirmed 20 California condors have died. 
With a total world population of just 561 birds, these 20 deaths represent a significant loss.
As of May 2, 2023, the good news is that four condors are being treated at Liberty Wildlife in Phoenix, Arizona, and are showing signs of improvement.

In the Region of the Americas, the risk of yellow fever outbreaks remains high in 2023, while vaccination coverage for this preventable disease has stagnated over the past decade. 
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) epidemiological update, confirmed cases of yellow fever were reported last year in several countries led by Bolivia (5 confirmed cases), Brazil (5 cases, including four deaths), and Peru (7 confirmed cases, including five deaths.
