While the United States is preparing for its next flu season with updated flu shots, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently reported on the global situation.
On June 26, 2023, the WHO announced Influenza Update N° 448, which stated influenza detections remained low globally.
However, what occurs in one hemisphere does not necessarily forecast what will happen in the other hemisphere because evolving influenza viruses impact populations differently, says the WHO.
Finding Flu in 2023 is Challenging
Seniors Can Get RSV Vaccines this Season
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today announced its current director endorsed the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendations for the use of new Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccines for people ages 60 years and older.
On June 29, 2023, Director Rochelle P. Walensky, M.D., M.P.H., confirmed RSV vaccines would become available for the 2023 RSV season using shared clinical decision-making.
$550 Million Supports New TB Vaccine Development
After twenty years of investment in research, tuberculosis (TB) vaccine development has strengthened, with sixteen candidates with the potential to help reach the global TB elimination target in 2030.
Announced today, Wellcome and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are funding $550 million to advance the TB vaccine candidate M72/AS01E (M72) through a Phase III clinical trial.
$502 Million Combats Bird Flu Outbreaks
As the detections of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) decreases, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced it is providing $502 million under the Animal Health Protection Act to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to prepare for future bird flu outbreaks.
In May 2022, there were a total of 18 commercial poultry HPAI detections in the U.S.
Texas Confirms First Malaria Case of 2023
According to health officials, a third malaria patient has been reported in Texas. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) was recently notified of a malaria diagnosis in a Cameron County, Texas resident who has not traveled outside the country or state.
DSHS has been working with local health departments to follow up on the case and determine whether other people may have been exposed to the mosquito-transmitted virus.
As of June 26, 2023, no other locally acquired malaria cases have been identified in Texas.
Where Is Dengue Infecting Vacationers
A recent study highlighted where international travelers most frequently contract the mosquito-transmitted dengue virus.
The Annuals of Internal Medicines published Original Research on June 20, 2023, with new data from a retrospective chart review and analysis of international travelers with complicated dengue from January 2007 through July 2022.
In the Region of the Americas, 46 countries and territories reported dengue cases in 2022.
These travelers acquired dengue most frequently in the Caribbean (31%) and Southeast Asia (24%).
Third Mpox Vaccination Not Recommended
While numerous mpox vaccine breakthrough cases have been reported in the United States and other countries in 2023, many patients and healthcare providers have sought clinical guidance regarding how many vaccinations are appropriate.
During the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) meeting on June 23, 2023, Agam Rao, MD CAPT, U.S. Public Health Service, presented considerations for long-term protection against mpox.

For example, India has reported 73,536 measles cases over the past year.
Are Bird Flu Vaccines Available
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes the importance of ongoing surveillance to detect human infections with influenza A viruses, including the highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus.
During the Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA) call on June 20, 2023, CDC presenters gave a comprehensive overview of novel influenza A viruses, including avian influenza vaccines.
Mpox Vaccine Found Safe for Children
A peer-reviewed study recently published by the Lancet Infectious Diseases assessed the safety, reactogenicity, and humoral and cellular immune response following the first reported use of the Bavarian Nordic JYNNEOS® (MVA-BN) vaccine in young children.
