As Ebola immunization scales up in Guinea, the country’s African neighboring nations are on high alert, urgently preparing to detect, isolate and manage any cases and quickly stamp out potential cross-border outbreaks, says the World Health Organization (WHO).
All six nations bordering Guinea are finalizing their national preparedness and readiness operational plans according to a WHO readiness assessment tool. The overall state of readiness in these west African countries is nearly 66% which is still lower than the benchmark of 80%.

These recommendations were made within the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, record-low levels of influenza detections were reported, and fewer viruses were available for characterization during September 2020 to January 2021 time period than in previous years, said the WHO.

On February 23, COVAX shipped 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca/ Oxford COVID-19 vaccine. These AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines were licensed to Serum Institute of India, and are known as ‘CoviShield.’
The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, formerly known as ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, is made from a virus (ChAdOx1), a weakened version of a common cold virus (adenovirus).
